Correct Breathing Techniques for Wind Instrument Players 1

The reason that I choose this topic is to be aware of how important breathing is for wind instrument players. Also to live more healthy correct breathing is a positive support for your body functions.

According to Asım Eren (Psychology) Breathing consists two stages; breathing and breathing out. These two stages are important not only one. So these stages should be fluent and rhythmical, equal. It should be without noise and stress. It reflects to both playing the phrases and doing a speech.

Position is also important to breathe correctly. Stand upright and feel the every parts of your body deeply.

Relaxed Soul According to Fahriye Koç

Fahriye Koç thinks that life is an exam and every day the difficulty of life increases. Every person has a different character and decision.  It causes not to think healthy and logical. We are able to gain calmness by breathe relaxed.

Correct breathing crates an energetic aura for a body. When we breathe the breath of life goes “solar plexus” than it goes back side of a body and down and again it comes front and goes out. This circling repeats through breathing.

Especially when we are shocked, nervous, afraid, unhappy briefly while feeling far away from relaxed and ruhig mode, five times correct breathing exercises make us to calm and logical mode.

To reach the enough calmness for a body, we should communicate the inner soul of the body. So that enlarges our auras and visions. Also it makes us to decide correctly.

The technique is take breath by nose and holds it into the body. And count until five. Then while counting five give the breath by mouth. Repeating this technique relaxes the body and support us to think positively.

According to Koç to contact with inner soul is important for calmness.

Dr. Andrew Weil who is a renowned doctor these years has a research about breathing. He suggests three important exercises about breathing.

  1. “The Stimulating Breath- Bellow Breath”

He says this technique comes from yogic breathing technique. The purpose of this is to raise the energy and increase alertness.

–          Frequently inhale and exhale through your nose and keep the mouth close. But it should not be stressed should be relaxed. Equally repeating this technique and as short as possible. You can hear a noisy sound through doing this.

–          Quickly three times inhale and exhale per second. And you feel your diaphragms movement. And breathe normally after each cycle.

–          (To care not to do more than 15 seconds on your first try.) By practicing this technique you can improve your time by five seconds or more, until you reach a full time.

If you do it properly, you may feel yourself more invigorated and improve the awareness of you after a good workout. You should feel the effort at the back of the neck, the diaphragm, the chest and the abdomen, Dr. Weil says.

  1. “ The 4-7-8 / Relaxing Breath Exercise”

He observes; this exercise technique is the most simple and beneficial one. You do not need any equipment or any special place to do it. Your position is not important but your back should be straight while applying this exercise. Your tip of the tongue should place just behind your upper teeth, and keep it here during the whole exercise. You exhale through your mouth around your tongue.

–          Exhale all the oxygen through your mouth by making whoosh sound.

–          While counting of four mentally, close your mouth and quietly inhale though your nose.

–          Hold your breath for a count of seven.

–          A count of eight exhales completely through your mouth by making again whoosh sound.

–          This is the one cycle. And try to do three times.

Care about your capacity. While doing it try to do more deeply than the previous one. So you will improve your capacity. And the formula is 4:7:8 is complete.

Dr. Weil says; the exercise triggers your nervous system positively. He claims that it is more useful than drugs, because it tranquilizing the nervous system more than drugs. When you take a drug at first time it damages your system and it is not a natural behavior. You can try it twice in a day. It is normal to feel lightheaded at the first try. When you develop this technique it will take you one step forward. You can control your tension.

  1. 3.       “Breath Counting”

Sit in a comfortable position you spine should be straight and head inclined little bit forward. Close your eyes and take few deep breaths. Than let it be natural inhale and exhale. Ideally it should be quiet and slow, deep and rhythm may concern.

–          First count one to begin and exhale

–          Then inhale and exhale this time count two.  You should repeat it until five.

–          Then repeat this cycle at very beginning counting one, two etc.

This is meditation technique because you give your attention to exhalation you will get purified.

The technique for the wind instrument players

Stephen Maxym thinks that breathing is much more important what some teacher’s said about tone and phrasing. According to his writing he trusts every detail in music made by wind players based on breathing. He addresses to string instrument players. Breathing is like a bow. If bow technique is not enough, the quality gets down. But when both right hand and left hand is good technically, the work that comes out is higher degree.

He says if a player’s breathing is well than he has fine sound, variety tone colors, a better intonation etc. The professionalism of players comes out. Also less stress and pressure more relaxing and fine tone comes out.

He advices players that they should breath diaphragm, chest and above the chest. The sense should be from tip of your foot finger below the neck you should feel every molecule in your organs. And while exhaling it should not be stress and forced. It should be fluent and leggier.

Fulya Anıt whose thesis I refer to has a master degree from Çukurova State Conservatory.

Fulya Anıt thinks that for the wind instrument players there are some other techniques that are required for any healthy person.

Sports like fitness, running, jogging, tracking and swimming are constructive skills to develop the body functions for a non-wind instrument player. Instead of doing sport there are focused exercises for the latter:

–          To run the stomach’s muscles lay back and pull knees towards your stomach. It should be done 100 times every day.

–           Stand against a wall and lean your stomach upon the wall. Try to push yourself by using muscles of stomach.

–          To feel diaphragm lay down back and put something heavy such as a book or an iron on your stomach, inhale and exhale into diaphragm.

–          Lay face down and rise arms and legs up.

–          Inhale to diaphragm very deeply and sing “ssss” very quietly. Extend this exercise from 10 seconds to 60. So it helps to use the air more economically.

–          Fill half of a glass with water. Take a pipe and exhale into the glass. That makes bubble. Not to stop that bubbling effect fill your cheeks with air and while exhaling inhale at the same time. Be careful not to stop bubbling.
