Baroque period started in Italy around 1600 and spread to Europe after that. It is an artistic era; it includes reasoning in philosophy – Descartes questions knowledge and if there is knowledge how it is different from opinion. He questioned if the life is real or a dream and if the “dream” or “real”give a way of thinking that he is something. (Bazin, Germain, Baroque and Rococo London: Thames and Hudson, 1998.) The period includes discoveries in science by Galileo and Newton (different approach to mathematics and experiment) and also evolution in music, painting, literature, etc. People were changing their aspects and exploring more of the world.
New discoveries in the science were significant for the world, for knowledge; also they help to growth the field of medicines. In painting, baroque style has exaggeration of perspective, intense emotions; the style did not represent the real life style of people in that period. In sculpture, the baroque period was a dynamic movement; the figures of group of people get more importance. Bernini was the most important sculptor of the period, even in 20th century, people cared about his art.
“Baroque art is a complex mixture of rationalism, spirituality, sensuality and materialism.”
- The Baroque period, Gordon Lamb.
